Masterpiece Studio(formerly known as MasterpieceVR)today announced the release of a free version of its latest professional VR creation suite, Masterpiece Studio Pro. The free software license is aimed at individual users who wish to use the suite for non-commercial purposes.
Reportedly, the free version includes all the features of Masterpiece Studio Pro, which is a subscription service for freelancers, teams, and educators to create tools.
Like the original Masterpiece Studio released in 2019, Masterpiece Studio Pro allows users to create 3D assets in virtual reality, using motion controllers for painting, sculpting, texturing, optimizing, rigging, skinning, and animation to create characters or objects. The Pro version was released in April 2021.
One of the main limitations of the original version was the inability to export models, a feature that was exclusive to paid users. The free version of Pro remains the same, but the studio has now created a public library where creations can be published and viewed.
"We believe that this free version will help showcase your work, bring value to other creatives, and help build the creative community of the future," the studio stated on its Steam page.
The Canadian startup, based in Ontario, positions this free license as a way to support independent VR creators, allowing them to learn the software for free and creating a way to share and remix those publicly shared works. The software is available for free on PC VR headsets on Steam and Viveport.
