Oculus CTO John Carmack delivered a keynote speech at the OC6 conference, addressing various topics including the failure of Gear VR. Carmack lamented the low retention rate of Gear VR compared to other Oculus VR headsets, attributing it to the cumbersome setup process and lack of wireless capability. He also discussed the company's efforts in social VR and the upcoming release of Facebook Horizon. Carmack mentioned that Quest will eventually be able to support PC wirelessly, and emphasized that 5G does not have unique value for VR but rather provides a better pipeline for immersive video streaming. He acknowledged the challenges in infrastructure development for 5G and questioned its potential impact on the VR market. Carmack concluded that while 5G can improve the consistent and stable transmission of content data, it does not necessarily change the types of VR experiences.
