Valve has released SteamVR 2.8.3 version, bringing support for Meta Quest hand tracking. Steam Link, initially launched in November 2023, allows users to wirelessly connect their Quest headset to SteamVR, enabling streaming of PC VR or tablet content. This feature essentially bypasses Meta's own Air Link. Valve has been continuously optimizing this streaming tool and the latest 2.8.3 version now supports Meta Quest hand tracking. Gesture tracking will be transmitted to the host using SteamVR skeletal input, both for skeletal inputs in SteamVR and the XR_EXT_hand_tracking OpenXR extension. However, it is important to note that this update does not bring full gesture tracking support for SteamVR, but allows limited gesture tracking through input mapping. Users can create bindings for games using the binding UI in the controller settings and map various Meta gestures to game inputs. Additionally, Valve has re-enabled the 2D streaming feature of Steam Link and fixed a black screen error for PICO users using Virtual Desktop in specific games.
