Oculus CTO John Carmack expressed confidence in his coding optimization abilities compared to dedicated graphics driver teams at the OC4 conference. He stated that GPU driver teams often make mistakes during driver development that can ultimately undermine optimization. Therefore, Carmack believes he can do better than them in handling low-level VR-related tasks. However, it should be clarified that Carmack's comments were not meant as criticism towards AMD or NVIDIA. He was discussing Oculus Go and a range of VR technologies when he made these remarks. Nonetheless, the comment attracted attention, especially considering the challenges faced by AMD and NVIDIA's driver teams at certain points in time. Both companies have recently focused on frequent driver updates, with new drivers optimized for specific games. If the driver teams' mistakes during updates affect the final optimization, as Carmack mentioned, it could be a reason behind the speed of new driver releases.
