Voices of VR Podcast:
Hello everyone, I'm Kent Bye, welcome to the Voices of VR Podcast. I've been discussing XR ethics and privacy issues for over three years now. In the past seven months, I've been attending various conferences, talking to people in the industry, and giving multiple presentations. I've been trying to bring together these different conversations. Ethics is like trying to figure out your moral intuition, what is acceptable and what is not acceptable? With XR, all these different backgrounds are merged, and all these questions need to be considered holistically in the design of specific experiences within an ethical framework. Ethics is about balancing the benefits and harms, and we have to weigh them when developing immersive technology. There's no perfect answer, and you won't always know what is right. It's a challenging problem, especially for those seeking clear-cut answers. When I talk to people like Diane Hosfeld, she talks about privacy engineering and the lack of perfect solutions. Engineering is about weighing all these different trade-offs and designing a system that serves all these interests as best as possible. But in ethics, we have to consider all aspects of life. Integrate all these different factors. It's actually a very challenging problem. But I feel that because I've talked to so many different people and had conversations with them, it's starting to cultivate my own moral intuition within the vast field of virtual reality. It'll be a 14-part series, as Episode 831 is a discussion with HTC. It's over 11 and a half hours of interviews, and I'll be introducing and unpacking my journey over the past seven months in the upcoming content.
