Valve's former VR engineer and co-creator of Xbox, Nat Brown, has joined Apple. Although specific details have not been disclosed, Brown expressed his excitement to continue his interest in graphics and collaborate with all those using graphics on the Apple platform. Brown was one of the first engineers to work on Microsoft's original Xbox and has recently been focused on VR, including working with Valve and serving as an advisor for the VR platform VREAL. Apple has a primary focus on the AR field, with rumors suggesting that the 2020 iPhone will feature a time-of-flight sensor and that the company may release an AR headset that relies on the iPhone for processing power. While AR has lower performance requirements compared to VR, it still puts pressure on the graphics processor as it needs to match the surrounding environment and avoid causing motion sickness in users. Apple unveiled ARKit 3, a tool for developers to create augmented reality content for iOS devices, at WWDC 2019. Brown's tasks at Apple may be related to ARKit and/or the future Apple headset.
