Valve, the technology company, has been sued by Immersion, a haptic feedback company, for using rumble technology in its handheld Steam Deck and VR headset Index. Immersion has accumulated numerous patents related to rumble feedback technology and has previously initiated patent lawsuits against major tech companies. The companies being attacked either paid for Immersion's authorization or settled out of court. Immersion has now targeted Valve, demanding compensation for infringement, royalty fees, and the cessation of using the infringing technology in its accused devices. Immersion has filed a complaint in the US Federal Court, citing several patents. Immersion has previously sued Microsoft, Sony, Google, and Motorola, with Sony and Microsoft opting for paid licensing agreements, while Apple, Google, Motorola, and Fitbit reached settlements. Meta (formerly Facebook) was also sued by Immersion, but Nintendo seems to have escaped litigation, possibly due to its development of the Rumble Pak technology for the N64. However, Nintendo voluntarily chose to collaborate with Immersion for technology licensing. Valve has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
