Google announced that its ARCore Depth API has been included in ARCore 1.18, now supporting Android and Unity (including AR Foundation). This update enables the generation of depth maps on hundreds of millions of Android devices without the need for specialized hardware, unlocking features such as occlusion. The occlusion feature allows digital objects to appear accurately behind real-world objects, creating a more realistic AR experience. Illumix, the developer of "Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery," used occlusion to hide specific characters behind objects, enhancing the realism and horror of the game. Apart from occlusion, the ARCore Depth API offers other methods to improve realism and enable new interaction types, such as realistic physics, surface interaction, and environmental traversal. Ideas on how to utilize depth have been shared through the ARCore Depth Lab on GitHub. Snap's designers and engineers have integrated some of these ideas into a set of Snapchat filters, and Snapchat filter creators can now download ARCore Depth API templates to create depth-based experiences for compatible Android devices.
