Oculus recently introduced three major optimization tools to reduce the iteration time for Unity development on the Quest headset. The first tool, OVR Build APK and Run, reduces build and deploy time by 10%-50% by utilizing gradle caching during APK build. The second tool, OVR Quick Scene Preview, utilizes Unity's Asset Bundle system to reduce deployment time by dividing the project and scenes into separate Asset Bundles, updating the device's bundles only when changes are made. Both tools have shown significant improvements in iteration time in collaboration with teams working on games like "Beat Saber," "Dead and Buried II," "SUPERHOT VR," and the Viking Village example from Unity Asset Store. Additionally, Oculus implemented shader stripping to remove unused Tier1 and Tier3 shaders from the build for improved performance. The optimizations have resulted in significant reductions in iteration time, with OVR Build APK and Run being the most effective tool, reducing iteration time by 54%. Oculus continues to prioritize improving the development experience for Quest developers.
