Insomniac Games, which was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in August this year, has brought us a series of excellent VR works, including "Stormland" and "The Unspoken". But this studio has also set its sights on augmented reality. It is reported that they are developing a work called "Strangelets" for Magic Leap One.
In fact, "Strangelets" is Insomaniac's second augmented reality game after "Seedling", which landed on Magic Leap World in December 2018. In "Seedling", players take care of mysterious alien plants in a science fiction background. They rely on real-world time and need several days of care to grow. In an era of severe global warming and pollution, this AR game can further illustrate the dangerous future we are facing.
"Strangelets" is based on the same universe. In the story, cute alien creatures called "strangelets" find themselves "trapped in the gaps between different dimensions". With the help of a mysterious companion named "Bulby", players will search for dimensional cracks in the house, reach inside them, and rescue these adorable foreign creatures. Players will use energy collected from real-world objects to take care of them. This is a unique experience that encourages players to physically move in multiple rooms and turn familiar spaces into playgrounds full of discovery and surprises.
Nathaniel Bell, the creative director of "Strangelets" and "Seedling", said, "After releasing 'Seedling', our small spatial computing pioneering team is more inspired for this new platform. We are ready to take the lead in the next experiment and continue our cooperation with Magic Leap. Our goal is to build on the experience of 'Seedling' to explore new areas of spatial computing that players have not yet experienced."
Whether they continue to invest in VR/AR or focus on traditional console/PC games, we are looking forward to Insomniac's next move. In any case, they are an experienced studio that has brought countless excellent works to players. We look forward to the masterpieces they will bring to PS5 and future PSVR.
