Valve has started shipping its SteamVR 2.0 base stations to developers, as seen in a tweet by VR headset manufacturer GameFace Labs. The packaging is labelled as "Prototype - Not For Sale", indicating that the devices are still in the testing phase. It is unclear when the official release of the 2.0 base stations will be, but it is worth noting that they are not backwards compatible with the 1.0 sensors used in HTC Vive headsets or Vive trackers. The new generation of headsets and accessories, such as the HTC Vive Pro, use the 2.0 sensors to take advantage of the full potential of the base stations. Valve has previously stated that they expected to ship the 2.0 base stations to authorized partners in early 2018 but supply will be limited initially. Valve also plans to provide a custom wall/ceiling mounting solution for the base stations. It remains unclear if Valve will directly sell the product to consumers or rely solely on OEM manufacturers.
